How to Calculate Your GPA

Whether you are academically competitive or an athlete that's hangin' on by the seat of your pants to avoid academic probation... or somewhere between, you may need to use a gpa calculator at some point. The purpose of this article is to show you how to calculate your GPA, or the math behind the calculator.

To begin with, your courses will have a credit value; it is usually 3 credits per a course, but more difficult courses can be 4 credits and in some cases a class may only be worth 1 or 2 credits.

Next you will want to know your grade, or make a grade estimate. Each letter grade has a corresponding value, as follows:
A = 4.00 points
A- = 3.70 points
B+ = 3.33 points
B = 3.00 points
B- = 2.70 points
C+ = 2.30 points
C = 2.00 points
C- = 1.70 points
D+ = 1.30 points
D = 1.00 points
D- = 0.70 points
F = 0 points

Step 1. Establish your grade points
Algebra : A- = 3.70 points
Physical Science : B = 3.00 points
English Literature : B+ = 3.33 points
Economics : B- = 2.70 points

Step 2. Establish Semester Credits
Algebra : 3 credits
Physical Science : 3 credits
English Literature : 3 credits
Economics : 4 credits
Total Semester Credits: 13 credits

Step 3. Determine Grade Points
Algebra : 3.70 points x 3 credits = 11.1
Physical Science : 3.00 points x 3 credits = 9
English Literature : 3.33 points x 3 credits = 9.99
Economics : 2.70 points x 4 credits = 10.8
Add Your Points: 11.1 + 9 + 9.99 + 10.8 = 40.89 total grade points

Step 4. Divide Grade Points by Semester Credits
Total Grade Points = 40.89
Total Semester Credits = 13
40.89 / 13 = 3.145
Your Grade Point Average (GPA) is 3.145
